Why don’t people leave abusive relationships?

Abuse often gets worse over time. Even if someone decides they no longer want to be in a relationship, it can be very difficult to get out.

Reasons can include:

  • Being scared to leave, especially if their partner has threatened to do something to them or themselves (or children) if they do
  • Not having any money or anywhere else to go
  • Worrying about their children and what may happen to them
  • Not having the emotional strength to leave
  • Still loving their partner
  • Hoping that the abuse will stop

Whatever the reason, it’s not their fault, and it’s important that they get non-judgemental help and support.
